Quorum sensing
Applying quorum sensing (QS) science to support animal health
Quorum sensing
Our animal health concept is based on Blue Health Vision’s Quorum Sensing (QS) technology. Our focus is to apply Quorum Sensing (QS) science in innovative solutions to support and optimize animal health by disrupting biofilms and inhibiting bacterial communication.
Join thousands of producers worldwide and adopt the Blue Health Vision standard for health and lifecycle management to optimize animal health, growth and production.
How bacteria talk
Bacteria communicate via “signal molecules”. These molecules bind to their counterparts’ receptors, and they fit together like cogs (see magnification). As soon as more molecules are measured, the behaviour of this group changes. They will then, for example, start to produce spores or produce a biofilm layer (= slimy extracellular matrix that is composed of extracellular polymeric substances).

ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE (AMR)
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global threat impacting aquaculture producers, veterinarians, and consumers. As bacteria become resistant, antibiotics lose effectiveness, making infectious diseases in aquatic systems harder to control. In species such as salmon, tilapia, and shrimp, many bacterial diseases still rely heavily on antimicrobials, contributing to the rise of resistance.
If left unchecked, AMR could cause up to 40 million deaths by 2050 and threaten global food security. The WHO warns against the routine use of antibiotics in animal production. Innovative and sustainable solutions, such as microbiome support and Quorum Sensing Inhibition, offer a promising path toward healthier aquaculture systems and a future with reduced antibiotic dependence. Join the change.
Which role does Quorum Sensing play in fish health?
In farming and animal health, quorum sensing is important because it plays a key role in biofilm development and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Disrupting quorum sensing can help prevent harmful bacterial behaviors, making infections easier to manage and reducing the need for antibiotics.
